Is Western medicine evidence based?

The British Medical Journal has been reviewing the evidence base of 3000 therapies carried out on the NHS. Here is a simple graph of their findings. http://clinicalevidence.bmj.com/x/set/static/cms/efficacy-categorisations.html It is quite startling to say the least. The more you look at it the more paradigm shattering it is. Western medicine loves to hold the narrative high ground that it is evidence based. It is the best medicine in the land. And don’t get me [...]

Chinese medicine for cancer

This has always been a bit of a delicate subject. Cancer has been turned into the bogey man of medicine. It has also been so medicalized, or at least been such a target for the medical establishment that they have monopolized treatment, knowledge, and research on the area. Anyone that tries to go near it will be labelled a quack almost instantly. However, one researcher from the field of Chinese medicine has managed to do [...]

My hopes and predictions for acupuncture for 2018

As you will of seen from my other blogs acupuncture has been getting more and more acceptance, more and more research and more and more understanding, which is great! However, there is still a long way to go. While acupuncture is being recommended for more conditions, by more health institutions and being added to more national health services and health insurance policies, it is still rarely available on the NHS. I don’t imagine there will [...]

Ohio adds acupuncture to Medicaid

As of the 1st of January 2018 acupuncture will be available in…. Ohio! Ok so it isn’t anywhere near the UK, which is a big shame. But this is great news for acupuncture internationally. Acupuncture will be available on Medicaid for patients with back pain and/or migraine. Ohio will be the first state in the Midwest to bring acupuncture onto its Medicaid provisions. This is in a response to the developing opioid crisis spreading across [...]

Is acupuncture evidence based?

Is acupuncture evidence based? Awareness and acceptance of acupuncture is at an all-time high and still increasing year on year. I see a wider variety of people in my clinics and I get more referrals from GPs with a growing variety of conditions. However, there can still be the perception that acupuncture is not effective, not based on evidence or just some kind of (super) elaborate placebo. So, I thought I’d compile this blog on [...]

Acupuncture on NICE guidelines for depression!

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), the group that advises the NHS on effective treatment strategies is updating its guidelines of depression and acupuncture has got a mention. The good news: NICE, ‘agreed that [acupuncture has] potentially promising results’. The less good news: No guidelines have been issues for acupuncture. This is a shame as acupuncture has a large body of research supporting its beneficial effects on depression, its lack of side-effects and its [...]

Acupuncture – The Best Medicine?

A huge new patient survey has been release that shows acupuncture significantly exceeds national benchmarks for quality of care. 93% of participants said their primary symptoms were successfully treated 99% said the quality of care and service was good or excellent Only 0.014% (13 people) reported a minor adverse effect, i.e. a bruise. None reported a major adverse effect The study was commissioned by American Speciality Health to see how satisfied their customers were with [...]

Benefits of acupuncture last a year!

A powerful study has been published showing that 90% of the benefits of acupuncture would last a year! This evidence has been extracted from a huge data-set amassed by a team at York University headed up by Hugh MacPherson. It includes nearly 18,000 patients from 29 clinical trials that focus on back pain, neck and shoulder pain, headache and migraine and osteo-arthritis of the knee. In this sub-section 20 studies were included that contained over [...]
